Neal Black’s roots in Pacific Northwest’s forests run deep. Fittingly, his favorite adage is “Society grows great when people plant trees under whose shade they know they’ll never sit.” Neal has spent a lifetime in law and policy, learning to see the forests, see the trees, and plant new ones.

On March 17, this Jewish boy from Brooklyn raises a glass to his old Irish boss, Stephen Martin Reilly. After a brief (right out of law school) stint as a junior prosecutor in San Francisco, the prospect of taking another bar exam, and looking for a job in another state, where I knew no one, except the graduate student at UW I was dating, didn’t sit well with my friends and family. But I was young and smitten by the lass. So off I went, with my cockatiel Baretta1 perched inside a shoe box on my lap, flying to Seattle.

When Socrates asked us to explain what justice is I blushed. Not from embarrassment, thank you very much, but from exasperation. Anyone familiar with the real world understands justice is the advantage of the stronger. In fact, injustice on a grand scale often appears stronger, freer, and more masterly than justice. The mountain may not always be out, but I look forward to a quick walk through a local park during lunchtime or planning an outing to one of Washington’s state parks on the weekend. It is a great way to break away from the ever-increasing to-do list regardinng client matters, emails, and drafts.

Stone House, 9701 Rainier Avenue, info@thestonehousecafe.com, 206.397.4102, is a fun location for brunch or lunch (it closes at 5 p.m.) in South Seattle. The picturesque location, across the street from Lake Washington, was a gas station from 1926 through 1963. The restaurant opened in 2015. The building is very distinctive for its “stacked rock” exterior.

This month I am excited to inform you of another change that the Bar has been working on since this time last year. With the ability to take advantage of resources to update our technology, we were finally able to move forward with a project that I believe will make interactions with the Bar easier for our members, easier for our staff, and will provide us with the data we need to learn which of our member benefits are most often utilized and appreciated by our members. This will also free up time to give our members the personal service that we always try to provide.
