Summary

In a lively hour, discover the work of courthouse facility dogs and how they are improving legal systems around the world. This international innovation had its origins here in Seattle more than 20 years ago, when the first courthouse facility dog, Ellie, was placed to work in the King County Prosecutor’s Office. Now there are hundreds of professionally trained dogs providing valuable support for vulnerable individuals during legal proceedings, including forensic interviews and courtroom testimony. Washington State has enacted clear legislation guiding the utilization of facility dogs not only in the courtroom, but when supporting victims and witnesses in community settings. Learn how these dogs, as well as trained and licensed therapy dogs, can improve the experience of and reduce stress for all participants in the legal process, in the courtroom and in law offices.
