Presentation: “Ninth Circuit Day at KCBA: Pro Bono Appeals Program With Guaranteed Oral Argument Cases, New Pilot Pro Bono Program, and Observations and Practice Tips from the Court and Practitioners”

Gregory M. Miller, Carney Badley Spellman, PS, Coordinator for the PNW District for 9th Circuit Pro Bono Program. Mr. Miller will introduce the presenters and briefly describe his pro bono appeals.

                    Presenters:

Hon. Leonard J. Feldman, Division One Judge, was a 9th Circuit judicial law clerk and the Circuit’s PNW District Coordinator of the Pro Bono Program from 1995-2023. He will provide a short history of referrals and success rates.

Hon. Lisa Fitzgerald, 9th Circuit Pro Bono Director & Chief Staff Attorney and Appellate Commissioner. Comm. Fitzgerald will discuss current operation of the pro bono program, the new Pilot program, and its benefits to the Circuit. She will also discuss the kinds of matters and issues she sees as an appellate commissioner, and suggestions and tips for practitioners. Q&A after remarks.  

Hon. Eric D. Miller, 9th Circuit Judge - Judge Miller will discuss his view of the Pro Bono Program, its benefits to the Circuit from a judge’s perspective, and practice pointers from a judge’s perspective including what judges would like practitioners to know as to briefing and oral argument, including on rehearing procedure, whether on a pro bono case or otherwise.  Q&A after remarks.

                     Brian C. Nadler, Schlemlein Fick & Franklin, PLLC, Seattle, member KCBA Appellate Practice Section - Mr. Nadler will briefly describe the civil case he recently accepted on assignment.
