Presentation: “The Intersection of School Discipline and Criminal Law: How to Protect a Student’s Rights in Both Arenas” by Natalie Findley-Wolf and Chris Williams

All children engage in behaviors that require discipline of some kind. Preferably, that takes place in a safe and secure home. Sometimes it involves intervention by third-parties such as teachers, school administrators, police, and the juvenile justice system. Sometimes the “best practices” that different systems use to deal with children cause unintended harmful long-term consequences. Practitioners ranging from those in schools to the juvenile court and foster care systems can gain a better understanding of the ways in which choices made in their work can impact the outcomes for a child in other arenas. Getting children back to school and learning may require different approaches than what advice might be given to address a particular legal challenge. Learn an intersectional approach to dealing with disciplinary issues regarding children, with a focus on things such as educational, residential and criminal law impacts.
