Summary

Presentation: “A Look Behind the Mask: Addressing Bias with Civility” by Paula Lustbader, J.D. and Craig Sims, J.D.

This presentation will cover:

Civility lawyering involves understanding the personal, professional, and societal costs of incivility, and committing to engage with self and others with consciousness, creativity, and community. Addressing explicit and implicit bias is a fundamental aspect civility. We believe that as we better understand our own biases and how they’ve impacted us, we can better understand others’ biases and respond to those biases rather than react. In this session, we will explore how we use masks, how removing masks increases our vulnerability and connect-ability, and how looking beyond others’ masks facilitates our shared humanity.
