We’re in the midst of summer now, and it’s hard not to think of all the tasks that haven’t been completed and hours that haven’t been filled. Still, August might be a month in which we let go of what no longer supports our growth — professionally and personally. By letting go of habits that hinder progress, such as unnecessary perfectionism, overcommitment, and procrastination, we can create space for clarity, innovation, and well-being — within our team and in how we serve our clients.

I hope everyone is staying cool after the heatwave in June and still looking forward to the summer. Whether it’s splashing in the pool, sipping cold lemonade, or relaxing in the shade with family and friends, this is the perfect time to enjoy the simple pleasures of summer. Hopefully, we’re all finding a moment to slow down and soak in the season.

June is a month full of change and celebration. Not only does this month welcome summer with its longer days and brighter skies, but there is a lot to celebrate. Celebrating can also be a time to reflect on what’s important — like freedom on Juneteenth, love during Pride Month, or appreciation on Father’s Day. No matter the reason, celebrations remind us to pause, be grateful, and enjoy the moment.

Law Day, held each year on May 1, and designated as such by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the late 1950s, highlights the law’s role in our country and society. This is a great opportunity to help our communities understand how the law protects liberty and freedom, allows the legal profession to help dispel misinformation and polarization, and helps foster an environment where citizens take an active interest in the law.

Spring is finally here. Hopefully, that means taking some time away from desks, briefs, and dockets to enjoy the springtime. On my end, I plan on visiting my alma mater to view the twenty-nine cherry blossoms at the University of Washington Quad. They’re worth checking out.

Now that February’s snow is out of the way, let’s hope that March’s springtime weather is a bit warmer and safer (for those of us commuting to the office).

Just like that, January is over and we’ve entered the second month of the year. For those looking forward to spring and more sunlight, March is only a month away.

January represents a time of fresh starts and setting up a solid foundation for the year ahead. So, rather than accumulating another failed resolution, I like to set achievable goals. As cheesy as SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals are, I am a fan of them because they make it easier to complete those goals (or resolutions). That feeling of completing a goal, either in the professional or personal spheres, is unbeatable.

As we watch the days in this month grow shorter and the nights longer, this world can feel isolating. Therefore, I hope that cozy gatherings and holiday celebrations foster connection and a spirit of generosity.

Practicing gratitude can enhance relationships and reduce stress, and rather than emphasizing competition and individualism, gratitude can remind us of the interdependence we share in our personal and professional lives. Listing even one or two things that I am grateful for every day helps me focus on the important things in life and sets a better tone for that day. I might be grateful for a great interaction with a client, a kind act from a family member, or a client’s smile at pro bono clinic. Opportunities for cultivating gratitude abound everywhere.
