Aloha from King County Superior Court.

As I previously reported, Judge Judy Ramseyer and Judge Cathy Shaffer retired from the King County Superior Court bench at the end of June.

William Dixon has been appointed by Governor Inslee to succeed Judge Ramseyer. At the time of writing, Judge Dixon’s start date has not been established, but we anticipate he will be beginning in July.

Greetings, I am writing the column this month to give KCBA members some insight into trial assignments and changes to our bench.

As Assistant Presiding Judge, one of my roles is to gather the chiefs of the various departments for a weekly meeting where we discuss the availability of courtrooms and where to assign trials. Each chief judge, Chief Criminal, Chief Civil, MRJC Chief, Chief UFC, Chief Juvenile, and Lead Dependency and Lead ITA, along with staff, meet once a week during the noon hour to compare notes, discuss length of trial and logistics of the cases, and which judges are available. Part of our calculus includes how many trial days are estimated, whether virtual or not, witness schedules including experts, interpreters, and any other logistics that would bear on the case. When you have your pretrial conferences with your respective judges, sharing this information is critical to land your case into an available trial court.

Aloha from King County Superior Court!

On April 20th, the Court hosted the King County Bar Association spring new attorney swearing-in ceremony. It was a wonderful event and well attended by the new admittees to the bar and their supporters. We also had a number of leaders from the bar, leaders from law schools, and judges in attendance. Palavi Wahi, the Managing Partner of the Seattle office and Co-Managing Partner of the United States for the K&L Gates Law Firm, as well as the Chair of the Firmwide Diversity Committee, gave a wonderful keynote address to the new attorneys. King County Superior Court congratulates all the new admittees for their hard work and perseverance!

Aloha from King County Superior Court.

On February 9th, the Court celebrated the formal investiture of Judge Taki Flevaris. Judge Flevaris was sworn in by Presiding Judge Patrick Oishi. He was robed by his parents, who traveled from Portland for the event. Chief Justice Steve González of the Washington State Supreme Court gave keynote remarks. Judge Flevaris made remarks and introduced his family and special guests. It was a terrific event formally welcoming Judge Flevaris to King County Superior Court. Judge Flevaris is assigned to our Unified Family Court Department and is really digging into his work. Great to have Judge Flevaris on board!

Aloha from King County Superior Court.

February 2023 is a busy and exciting time for the Court, after a whirlwind month of January.

On January 13, we completed physical moves of judges and bailiffs to new courtrooms and courthouses due to new 2023 judicial assignments. On January 17, judges officially began their new assignments and caseloads. Our eight newest judges completed attendance at Washington State Judicial College early this month.
