After President Karen Orehoski called the meeting to order, the Board approved the minutes for the Board meeting held September 20, 2023.
Jessica Adair, KCBA’s CPA, provided a financial update for July 1–September 30, 2023 and noted membership numbers are catching up as projected and KCBA is on track with expenses. She also highlighted minor changes made to the Short-Term Investment Policy. The revised policy was reviewed and adopted as submitted.
President Orehoski welcomed new trustee, Joel Merkel. Due to Paul Crisalli’s appointment to the bench, President Orehoski asked for recommendations for potential nominees to fill the vacant seat.
She also thanked all involved in the well-attended Swearing-In Ceremony. Looking ahead, she reminded the Board of the Bar Scholar’s Reception on November 2, 2023, and this year’s Bench Bar conference on November 10 at the Seattle Convention Center.
NLD Chair Alyssa Nevala reported a great turnout at the Swearing-In Ceremony and the KCBA Mixer on October 11, 2023. NLD planned a game night for members for October 19, 2023, and is planning upcoming CLEs. NLD is still in the process of filling two vacant board seats.
ABA Delegate Kathleen Hopkins presented highlights from the ABA House of Delegates annual meeting held this past August, including matters decided by the House and the presidential speaker series. Member Services Director Bridget Schuster presented highlights from the Member Services Director’s report as submitted in the meeting packet. She discussed inquiries received from LLLTs about KCBA membership. President Orehoski will review the Bylaws and decide at the next board meeting, and she invited other trustees to send feedback or comments on this matter.
Mr. Rory O’Sullivan, the Public Policy Committee Chair, presented information for the legislative agenda for the Democracy and Technology and Removing Barriers to Re-Entry subcommittees. The committee is asking the Board to vote on these at its November meeting, and Mr. O’Sullivan welcomed Board input before the next Public Policy Committee meeting on November 6. President Orehoski thanked Mr. O’Sullivan and recommended all board communication/comments be tracked in one email trail to better capture all issues and concerns for the Committee to address before the vote at the November meeting.
The Housing Justice Project Task Force will be meeting soon.
Executive Director Christine Coad also gave an update on the status of negotiations for KCBA’s office lease and directed trustees to the meeting materials for more details.
