The following are highlights from the KCBA Board of Trustees meetings held on August 16, convened by KCBA President Karen Orehoski.

After President Orehoski called the meeting to order, the Board approved the meeting minutes for the Board meetings on June 6, June 21 (with minor changes), and July 19, 2023. Treasurer Wang reported that KCBA exceeded its revenue goals significantly this year, mostly because of improved membership numbers and increased grants which were not guaranteed in the original budgeting process.

President Orehoski reported on the upcoming Bench-Bar event on November 10. She also asked the Board to look for opportunities to be involved in the judicial survey process and KCBA Committee assignments. Committee assignments would be forthcoming.

NLD Chair Alyssa Nevala informed the Board about an upcoming NLD retreat, and that she is excited to take the reins as NLD chair. The first NLD meeting was September 5.

Executive Director Coad provided her first report to the Board as Executive Director. She highlighted her report. She also lauded the excellent work of Associate Executive Director Kathleen Jensen for her hard work and commitment to KCBA, particularly while serving as Interim Executive Director.

The Board next considered the appointment of retired Judge Richard F. McDermott to the Board to fill eleven months vacancy remaining on a three-year term. President Orehoski informed the Board about the vacancies that have occurred on the Board and the need to appoint a replacement. She recommended the Board approve Judge McDermott, referencing her memorandum to the Board. After discussion, there was a motion to approve the appointment of Judge McDermott, which was approved with one abstention.

The Board was referred to the Member Services Director’s report for the latest updates, before Secretary Crisalli informed the Board that he met with Executive Director Coad to inform her about the background on the Housing Justice Project spinoff. The Board discussed the need to ensure protocols for consistent messaging of HJP and the KCBA.

President Orehoski then adjourned the meeting.
