Submit Your Nomination for Outstanding New Lawyer, Solid Membership, and 2023 Leadership Slate

By Paul Crisalli

The following are highlights from the KCBA Board of Trustees meeting held on March 15, convened by KCBA President Tahmina Watson.

After the meeting was called to order and the minutes were approved by a voice vote, the New Lawyer Division Liaison reported the Ethics CLE last month was well attended. NLD also hosted a trivia night, and the Spring Soirée is scheduled for April 6th. NLD asks that nominations for the Outstanding New Lawyer of the Year Award be sent to the NLD Board.

Treasurer Theresa Wang reported membership numbers are solid and expenses are on budget for the year.

President Tahmina Watson asked the Board to read the article she wrote in the Bar Bulletin about the passage of the ABA Resolution. She also reported that KCBA was invited to be part of the interview process with the King County Superior Court regarding the replacement of long-time Clerk, Barbara Miner, who is retiring.

Interim Executive Director Kathleen Jensen referenced her memorandum for an update. She highlighted the upcoming Breakfast with Champions, which will include guest speaker Doug Baldwin and a feature on KCBA’s Pro Bono Program’s Record Project. The Annual Awards Celebration is scheduled for June 20th.

Judge McKee presented two requests from the Diversity Committee requiring Board approval. First, after discussion, the Board approved the request to change the name of the committee to the Anti-Racism and Equity Committee. Second, the Board voted to approve the Anti-Racism Statement with the amendment to change the name. The Board discussed the possibility of the committee’s providing action items in support of the statement. Possible steps include displaying the Anti-Racism Statement on KCBA’s website, a section set aside in the Newsletter, and other means to support this effort. The Committee and Board welcome input on the Anti-Racism Statement.

Sarah Elerson presented the Fiscal Year 2023 Leadership and Nominations Slate. Candidates nominated include: Sidney Tribe (Second Vice-President), Caleb O. Bonm (Trustee-Secretary), Amit D. Ranade (Trustee-Central), Joanna Boisen (Trustee-Central), Shashi Vijay (Trustee-Eastside), and Emily Gause (Trustee-Southside). The Board approved the slate by voice vote.

Membership Director Bridget Schuster referenced the March Membership Report to provide an update on membership efforts. She also shared a demonstration of KCBA’s new website, which will be launched in April.

The Board went into Executive Session and concluded its meeting.
