Why Law Day Matters: Protecting Rights, Enabling Dreams - BAR BULLETIN

Bar Bulletin

Each year on May 1, our nation observes Law Day, a time to reflect on one of the most fundamental founding principles of our democracy: the rule of law. Established by the American Bar Association in 1958 during a period of global uncertainty, Law Day was created to affirm the importance of legal institutions in protecting liberty, ensuring justice, and preserving the freedoms we often take for granted. Today, Law Day continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the essential role that law plays in shaping a fair and equitable society.

The 2026 Law Day theme, “Rule of Law and the American Dream,” speaks directly to the promise at the heart of our nation. The American Dream rests on the belief that every person, regardless of background, has the opportunity to pursue their aspirations. This promise is only possible when the rule of law is upheld consistently and impartially. It ensures that no individual is above the law, that rights are protected, and that everyone has access to the same legal protections. Without the rule of law, opportunity becomes uncertain; with it, possibility becomes real.

KCBA’s Commitment to Civic Engagement for Students

At the KCBA, Law Day is not only a moment for reflection, but also a call to action and an opportunity to carry this national tradition forward at the local level. This spring, KCBA is partnering with area courthouses to host immersive Law Day programs designed to introduce students to the legal system in an engaging and accessible way.

Between March and May 2026, more than 600 middle- and high-school students from across King County will participate in courthouse-based educational experiences. Through mini mock trials, courthouse visits, and interactive conversations with legal professionals, these students will experience firsthand how the justice system works and why it matters.

2026 Law Day Student Programs

  • March 6, 2026 – KCDC East Division, Redmond Courthouse
  • March 20, 2026 – Maleng Regional Justice Center
  • April 20, 2026 – SeaTac Municipal Court
  • May 22, 2026 – Seattle Municipal Courthouse

These programs are designed to make the legal system tangible and relatable. For many participating students, this may be their first time inside a courthouse or their first meaningful interaction with legal professionals. Our hope is that Law Day offers a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of lawyers, judges, and civic leaders, and to ensure that our profession grows more representative of the communities we serve.

An important component of our student programs is ensuring that each participant leaves with a tangible reminder of their Law Day experience. To make this possible, KCBA will provide each participating student with a Law Day goodie bag—containing resources and mementos to reinforce their learning and foster positive associations with the legal system. Our goal is to raise $7,000 to support these materials. Sponsorships of $500 or $1,000 will directly support student engagement and will be recognized in event materials and in thank-you notes included with each bag.

In addition to sponsorships, we are also looking for volunteers to help bring the legal system to life by assisting with scripted mock trials, guiding students through interactive activities such as separation of powers workshops and civics-themed exercises, and supporting simulations of real-world civic processes, including presenting resolutions before a city council. While specific activities vary by location, each role offers a meaningful way to engage with students, strengthen public understanding of the law, and inspire the next generation’s confidence in our legal system.

We invite law firms, legal organizations, and community partners to join us in supporting these impactful events. Together, we can ensure that Law Day 2026 leaves a meaningful and lasting impression for these students.

Looking Ahead

As we approach Law Day 2026, I encourage every member of our legal community to reflect on the profound responsibility we share. The rule of law is not self-executing. It requires vigilance, education, and engagement. By mentoring students, supporting civic education, volunteering at Law Day events, and reaffirming our professional commitments, we strengthen the foundation upon which our democracy rests.

Law Day reminds us that the rule of law is not an abstract concept. It is a living promise, one that makes the American Dream possible. Together, through education, service, and leadership, we can ensure that this promise endures for generations to come.
