Joanna Black loves a good puzzle. “I enjoy the thrill of problem-solving, uncovering hidden truths, and engaging my brain in a fun and challenging way,” she says. But for her, this passion is more than a pastime — it’s a driving force that has shaped her career. With a sharp strategic mind and a steady hand, she now plays a pivotal role in aligning the ever-shifting pieces of law, innovation, and risk at Madrona Ventures as the firm’s first General Counsel.

This rare combination of legal acumen and emotional intelligence has made her not only an effective leader at Madrona, but also a respected and influential voice in Seattle’s tech legal community. But if you ask her how she got there, she’ll tell you about the unexpected turns, bold leaps, and even the occasional self-doubt. Refreshingly grounded and reflective, Joanna remains humble, a trait she credits to her upbringing.

Growing up in a middle-class immigrant family, Joanna’s journey was fueled by drive and determination. After excelling in high school and even skipping a grade, she attended Stanford University to pursue a degree in economics and public policy. An MBA seemed like the natural next step but, due to her young age, she lacked the work experience most business schools required. With student loans piling up, the all too familiar exaggeration “You can do anything with a law degree!” sealed the deal, and one aced LSAT later, she was off to Columbia Law School at just 20 years old.

While the steep learning curve at Columbia was manageable, adjusting to life in New York was another story. “My Midwest upbringing and California college experience didn’t quite prepare me for the intensity of New York,” she admitted. But the city instilled in her the resilience that would become her greatest strength. “Recognizing what building resilience feels like in the moment (hint — frustration and fear) is the key to moving faster through future barriers and setbacks,” she said.

The toughness and adaptability Joanna developed in New York proved invaluable as she launched her legal career, first at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and then as one of the first associates at Venture Law Group. Those early years taught her many important lessons, including that success isn’t solely about gaining legal expertise — it’s about surrounding yourself with the right people: trusted confidants, advisors, and sponsors who become invaluable not only in times of triumph, but in times of struggle.

Private practice laid the foundation for the next chapter of her career at Xcyte Therapies, a public biotech company, where she became General Counsel. It was a transformative experience, one she recalls with both pride and a tinge of PTSD. “I was five or six years into my career, running on pure adrenaline for three straight months during my first IPO, while balancing the demands of being a new mom — I think I aged three years in that time,” she laughed. Her time at Xcyte not only deepened her legal expertise but also helped shape the leadership philosophy, founded on persistence, consistency, and generosity.

Persistence opened doors that otherwise seemed shut, like the time she persuaded a partner at Wilson Sonsini to meet with her during his lunch break despite not being selected for an on-campus interview. Accompanying him on his quest to find a sandwich led to a callback interview and, ultimately, a job offer.

Consistency has likewise played a major role throughout her professional journey. “Your career isn’t defined by one big moment, but by the small things you do repeatedly,” she explained. This mindset has guided both major decisions and everyday tasks. “I want to be known for being responsive, efficient, reliable, gracious, and wise — with every email, every conversation, and every piece of work product, no matter how small, I strive to embody those qualities consistently,” she said.

And as for generosity — this trait is most evident in the time she devotes to helping others. For many legal leaders in Madrona’s portfolio, Joanna is more than just the firm’s General Counsel; she is a mentor, a connector, and a trusted sounding board. “Showing up generously reminds me that life is not all about me, and that we are put on this earth to look out for one another,” she said.

Joanna’s dedication to lifting others up isn’t just a belief — it’s a value shaped by her own experience. When she joined Madrona Ventures as its first General Counsel in 2022, it was in part due to a recommendation from her former mentor, Craig Sherman. This endorsement opened the door to an extraordinary opportunity — one she has seized with purpose, vision, and intent. Just a few years into her role and she’s already made a profound impact, including launching the highly successful Madrona General Counsel Summit, a must-attend event that draws hundreds of top legal leaders to Seattle. “I wanted to create an event I’d be excited to attend — one that fosters genuine community and inspiration, not just another transactional networking affair,” she explained.

Outside of work, Joanna is married to her college sweetheart, a fellow lawyer, and is a loving mother to their two college-age sons. She joked that if her life were a detective novel, it would be titled The Case of the Balancing Act — but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love being a mom — especially a working mom,” she said. “I try hard to model the kind of person I want my boys to become.” With that in mind, she strives to embody grace, magnanimity, and self-compassion, reminding herself and her family that being human means embracing imperfections. “We’re all just doing our best, and we’re not meant to get it right all the time,” she reflected.

Whether she’s maintaining equilibrium between her career and personal life, driving the success of Madrona’s portfolio companies, or uplifting others through mentorship and building community, Joanna is redefining what it means to be a modern-day General Counsel, proving that business savvy and a heart for people do, in fact, fit together perfectly, like two final pieces of a Ravensburger puzzle.
