Immigration has always been a hot button issue but the new administration’s promises to launch a mass deportation program at “lightning speed” has pushed the issue front and center. Complications surrounding this program will impact not only attorneys who specialize in immigration law, but those who work in myriad other areas including family, employment, and school/education fields.
The King County Law Library has an array of resources to help you get up to speed on current immigration law issues. Here’s a brief (non-exhaustive) round-up of some of the key immigration resources in our collection.
Immigration Law and Procedure (Print and Remote via Lexis Digital)
Immigration Law and Procedure is the gold standard treatise in the field. It is a 22-volume set that covers all aspects of immigration law with references to relevant statutes and regulations, along with agency decisions and guidance documents. The first chapter offers a succinct primer to the maze of sources and authority that comprise the law of immigration. It also has a basic outline of immigration law, including explanations of the concept of entry, the admissions procedure, visa issuance, detention, parole & removal, and nationality & citizenship.
These and other subjects are covered with in-depth analysis and citations throughout the set. This set is frequently cited in federal district and appellate courts including the US Supreme Court. You can access Immigration Law and Procedure in print at the law library or from the convenience of your home or office via Lexis Digital as a KCLL subscriber.
Bender’s Immigration Bulletin (Remote via Lexis Digital)
Immigration law, policies, and judicial interpretation are changing more rapidly than ever. Published twice a month as a companion to Immigration Law and Procedure, Benders Immigration Bulletin has up-to-date expert analysis of emerging developments. Remote access via Lexis Digital allows subscribers easy access to this indispensable current-awareness tool at your home or office. Nonsubscribers may access it in the law library.
Immigration Law Handbook (Remote via Lexis Digital)
Also a companion to Immigration Law and Procedure, the Immigration Law Handbook collects essential immigration primary law in one source. This resource includes cross references, sections-affected, classification & charts, and highlights the most recent Congressional actions. It is available via remote access for KCLL subscribers on Lexis Digital and can be accessed by all users in the law library.
Steel on Immigration
(Westlaw at KCLL)
Steel on Immigration is a 2-volume set that covers major immigration topics but without the depth of analysis of Immigration Law and Procedure. Steel provides a good introduction and overview with coverage of controlling law and procedures. You may access Steel via our in-house Westlaw subscription at either our Seattle or Kent location.
Kurzban’s Immigration Law Sourcebook (Print)
Kurzban’s is designed as a concise reference tool for immigration law issues both simple and complex. It is the initial go-to resource for many immigration law practitioners and a favorite tool of many. You can find it in print at the law library.
Immigration Compliance and Best Practices (Remote via
Lexis Digital)
ICE worksite enforcement actions can result in criminal investigations of employers suspected of violating immigration law. Criminal immigration investigations may employ worksite raids or other enforcement methods to target employers and employees. Immigration Compliance and Best Practices helps to protect employers and employees with advice on best practices for remaining in compliance and responding to enforcement actions.
H-1B Handbook (Westlaw at KCLL)
The H-1B Handbook walks you through the H1-B approval process from start to finish. It references pertinent rules, regulations, forms, supporting documentation, and analysis. The Handbook also provides details on extensions, amended petitions, visa renewals, and permanent residence strategy. You can view sample documentation for specific professions including computer professionals, doctors, service professionals, business professionals, or consulting firms. You may access the H-1B Handbook via our in-house Westlaw subscription at either our Seattle or Kent location.
