Board Approves Resolutions and Discusses Executive Director Transition

The following are highlights from the KCBA Board of Trustees meeting held on September 18, convened by KCBA President Erin Overbey.

President Overbey called the meeting to order at 12:05pm and welcomed the guests and several members from KCBA’s Employee Union who presented their concerns regarding the amount of wage increases provided for in the FY25 board approved budget. Members also presented their personal stories advocating additional funding for wage increases due to the rising cost of living in King County. After the presentation, the Board approved the meeting minutes from the August 21, 2024 board meeting.

Ms. Simantov, NLD Chair, reported that the NLD had its first board meeting earlier in September and presented highlights from her written report, including the division’s plans to focus this year on recruitment of new members and increasing participation in NLD Board sub committees. She also noted that the NLD would be at the Swearing-in Ceremonies and hosting back-to-school events at the University of Washington and Seattle University School of Law.

Treasurer Black presented the financials and noted that we are currently 17% through the year and both revenue and expenses are below budget. The variances are related to timing and when grant revenue is recognized. Membership is down slightly but ahead of where we were at this time last year, and expenses are slightly under budget.

Ms. Lin gave an update on the upcoming NLC 50th Anniversary reception on September 24th at the Rainier Club. There are currently 80 RSVPs. In addition, she also announced the retirement of colleague Harry Higgins, Program Coordinator at the HJP Kent office, after 14 years of service and highlighted his great contributions to HJP and the KCBA.

Lastly, the board approved bank resolutions for KCBA and KCBI to change the list of approved signatories for the Association. After the resolution approval, the Board entered Executive Session to discuss the Executive Director transition, Finance Director search and the labor mediation status and Union request.
