Neighborhood Legal Clinics’ 50th Anniversary Year in Review

By Devon Stark

As we quickly approach the holiday season, we can’t believe how quickly our Neighborhood Legal Clinics 50th anniversary year has sped by. Here are some of the highlights:

Most months this year, we’ve used this column to spotlight various aspects of our program—from a general overview of the services we provide, to profiles on a few of our partner legal clinics and community organizations, to a look into some of the most common legal matters we see at our clinics. In case you missed it: check out September’s article, written by NLC’s founding attorneys, Joseph Gaffney, Philip Cutler, and Joseph Murphy.1

In May, NLC was recognized at King County Bar’s Breakfast With Champions fundraiser. Watch this video created for the event!2

On September 24th, we hosted a 50th anniversary program celebration at the Rainier Club. Guests heard from 2023 Pro Bono Award winner Michael Goldenkranz about the importance of NLC in Mike’s life and in the community. We also heard from two of NLC’s founding attorneys, Joseph Gaffney and Philip Cutler, about their experience starting the first Legal Clinic at the Country Doctor Medical Clinic in Capitol Hill. It was wonderful to see so many people turn out to support this milestone anniversary! Thank you to our speakers and attendees for helping us make this night special.

As exciting as this year has been, our NLC team is also looking ahead. In 2025, we hope to expand partnerships with our community organizations, recruit more attorney volunteers, and continue doing outreach work to ensure we reach clients from all areas of King County.

Want to get involved? The best gift you could give is your time! To learn more about volunteering with NLC, visit KCBA’s website for Pro Bono Services or contact me at DevonS@kcba.org.3
