NLD Updates: Engaging New Lawyers, Law Students, and Supporting Our Community - BAR BULLETIN

Bar Bulletin

Posted on: Nov 1, 2024

We’re thrilled to introduce this new regular column from the New Lawyers Division in lieu of the regular Executive Director column, which is on hold until a new Executive Director is finalized. Watch for New Voices In The Law in future editions of Bar Bulletin.

Did you know? Members of the New Lawyers Division (NLD) are attorneys that have been practicing for 10 years or less. When an attorney with less than 10 years’ experience joins KCBA they are automatically members of the NLD and eligible to participate in all NLD events. Participation in the NLD is a great way to meet other attorneys, expand your network, give back by participating in charitable events and grow your knowledge at our recurring CLE’s. The NLD also admits student members from statewide law schools and the WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk program for no membership cost. Presently the NLD has 1550 members and is served by a board of 17 trustees including lay members and student liaisons from the University of Washington and Seattle University law schools. The NLD is the biggest section of the KCBA!

Happenings: The 2024–2025 NLD Board met for our annual retreat on August 15 and welcomed seven new members. At the retreat, the board conversations centered on engaging new lawyers and student membership. In line with these efforts, the NLD hosted a back-to-school happy hour on August 29 at the Chieftain Pub for SU law students with at least 75 students in attendance. Great food and drinks were enjoyed by all! We also hosted a back-to-school happy hour on September 25 at Big Time Brewing for UW law students with a turnout of 55–60 students. The NLD hosted both events to spread the word about ourselves and invite students to learn more about our offerings and the benefits of membership at no membership cost to students.

Coming Up: Holiday Drive with Mary’s Place—Support Families in Need This Holiday Season!

Join us in spreading joy this holiday season by donating to Mary’s Place, a local non-profit dedicated to supporting families experiencing homelessness in our community. This year, we are collecting toys and gift cards to bring smiles to children and parents alike.

You can help by choosing from our suggested toy list at Mary’s Place Holiday Toy Drive.1 If you prefer, gift cards are also a wonderful option—please consider a minimum donation of $25. This allows families being served in their shelter to select what they need most during this special time of year.

How to Help:

  • Select a toy from Mary’s Place’s suggested toy list on their website, or from our Amazon Wish List: https://a.co/6KowZCm.
  • Purchase a physical Gift Card from Target, Walmart, Fred Meyer, TJ Maxx, or Amazon.
  • Drop off or ship your donations to the KCBA offices at 1200 5th Ave, Suite 700, Seattle, WA 98101 (Attn: Holiday Drive) or drop them off in-person at one of our upcoming social events.

Together, we can brighten the holidays for families in need. Thank you for your kindness and support!
