Board Approves the 2024 Annual Award Recipients

The following are highlights from the KCBA Board of Trustees meetings held on May 15, convened by KCBA President Karen Orehoski.

After President Karen Orehoski called the meeting to order and welcomed the Board and guests, the Board approved the meeting minutes for the Board meeting on April 17, 2024.

Treasurer Theresa Wang provided the Treasurer’s report and referred the Board to the financial memo for more details. KCBA continues to have a strong year with increased revenue in several areas and expenses continuing to be under budget.

Ms. Jessica Adair presented KCBA’s 2025 fiscal year draft budget to the Board, reviewed the budget including notes detailing an increase in projected grant revenue, expectations for LRS revenue as a fluctuating and an increase in wage and benefit expenses. She also asked the Board to submit any questions or comments before the Board votes on the budget at its June 21st hearing.

Housing Justice Project Taskforce members, including guests Neal Black (HJP Taskforce Chair), Scott Collins (King County Bar Foundation representative), and Jan Glick (Glick Davis and Associates) briefed the Board on the phases, fiscal sustainability, contingency planning, and strategic planning consensus regarding the potential divestiture of the Housing Justice Project. They discussed their recommendation to recruit and hire a transition administrator, and the Board approved the “Board Resolution Approving the Recruitment and Hiring of a Transition Administrator.”

After a presentation by Awards Committee Chair Erin Overbey, the Board discussed and approved the slate of award recipients for the KCBA Annual Awards Celebration which will be held on June 27, 2024. Congratulations to Tom Fitzpatrick (Outstanding Lawyer Award), The Honorable Justice Mary Yu (Outstanding Judge Award), Professor Robert Chang and the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality (Friend of the Legal Profession Award), and Lianna Bash (Individual Pro Bono Award)!

With no further business pending, President Orehoski adjourned the meeting.
