KCBA Supports I-502, R-74

KCBA is supporting two of the policy measures on the November election ballot. First, we endorse I-502, which would license and regulate marijuana production, distribution and possession for persons 21 or older; remove state criminal and civil penalties for activities that it authorizes; tax marijuana sales; and earmark marijuana-related revenues.

KCBA adopted this framework in 2007 when it passed a resolution stating, "Marijuana should be regulated and taxed, and most criminal sanctions should be eliminated." Second, we endorse R-74, which would allow same-sex couples to marry, preserve domestic partnerships only for seniors, and preserve the right of clergy or religious organizations to refuse to perform, recognize or accommodate any marriage ceremony. The referendum would ratify the action taken by the Legislature earlier this year.

In 2005, KCBA adopted this framework when it passed a resolution stating, "Two people of the same sex should have the right to marry under state law and to undertake the legal responsibilities and enjoy the legal protection associated with civil marriage under the law." The KCBA resolution came after long study and debate, including a membership survey finding that 72% were in favor of this policy position.
