The veteran Johnson & Associates1 squad capped off an 11-1 season and was crowned back-to-back champs with a spirited, high-scoring victory in the 2012 Seattle Lawyers Basketball League title tilt on May 30.
Franklin High School, sporting a new gym floor, hosted the 28th Seattle LBL Championship. For the first time in league history, all the top seeds in each bracket won their respective games.
In the championship game, J&A, the No. 1 tourney seed, jumped to a quick 10-5 lead over the second-seeded Riddell/Giuliani hoopsters.2 But R/G, attempting to avenge a season-opening overtime loss, came roaring back with six first-half treys to knot the score at 41 going into halftime.
Riddell/Giuliani's young legs kept the game close in the second half, but Dre Lang - conjuring memories of his steady-handed leadership in the 2011 title match - ultimately carried the older Johnson squad to a 77-70 win.
Johnson & Associates team members and their respective law schools are: Yousef Arefi-Afshar (UW, '08), Nathan E. Durrance (Cal Berkeley, '03), Kyle A. Farnam (UW, '08), Eric C. Hanson (Seattle U., '96), Robert Iannucci (Boston U., '88), Anthony C. Johnson (Boston U., '88), Andre L. Lang (Seattle U., '05), Eric S. Nelson (Pepperdine, '92), Robert J. "Jack" Slavik (Seattle U., '96) and William R. Spurr (Boston U., '90).
Did I hear someone say Three-peat®?
1 Johnson & Associates is the name of the basketball team composed of 10 lawyers, many of whom are practicing law in small firms. It is not a law firm and the team members are not legal associates in captain Anthony Johnson's law firm, although one team member, Eric Nelson, is his law partner.
2 Riddell/Giuliani is a merger of law firms Riddell Williams PS and Bracewell & Giuliani only for on-basketball-court purposes.
