Even though it has been almost 30 years since my last back-to-school experience, I still look upon every September with a little sadness since it is the end of summer. I enjoy spending time in the office a lot more than spending time in the classroom, but I still have the sense that September means it's time to buckle down and get back to business, and that the rainy season soon will be upon us.

Partners and Principals

David Benson, David Hattery, Michael Kelley and Richard Guidice, Jr. have all joined K&L Gates as partners. Benson and Hattery are members of the firm's Energy, Infrastructure and Resources Practice Group and were formerly with Stoel Rives LLP. Kelley, whose practice emphasizes state and local tax law, has returned to the firm after working at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Guidice's practice focuses on investment management and securities law.

Linda Clapham has rejoined Carney Badley Spellman, P.S. as a principal. Clapham was previously with Gordon & Rees, LLP. She has extensive insurance coverage and litigation experience.

Vern Francissen has joined Lane Powell as a shareholder. Francissen, who most recently was senior patent counsel at Microsoft Corporation, is admitted to practice in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and other jurisdictions.

Associate Additions

Harold Storey, Syed Abedi, John Wakeley and Christopher Glover have become associates at Seed IP Law Group PLLC. Storey is in the firm's Litigation Group where he deals primarily with matters related to the biotechnology, chemistry, pharmaceutical and computer industries. Abedi, who is part of the firm's Mechanical Engineering Group, works in the areas of U.S. and foreign mechanical patent prosecution, IP litigation and enforcement matters. Wakeley and Glover have joined the firm's Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Group, where Wakeley focuses his practice on patent prosecution in the electrical and mechanical arts, and Glover concentrates on U.S. and European patent prosecution.

James Fearon Brown has become an associate in K&L Gates' Seattle office. His primary practice is IP procurement and portfolio management. Brown was formerly with Seed IP Law Group PLLC.
