Bench Bar Conference 2015
The annual Bench Bar Conference was held November 11 at Seattle University School of Law with over 100 judges and lawyers in attendance. Special guests included Chief Justice Barbara Madsen and Attorney General Bob Ferguson. Panels included a “presiding judges forum” that featured leaders from the Court of Appeals, King County Superior Court, King County District Court, and Seattle Municipal Court. Additional sessions explored issues related to legal financial obligations imposed on the indigent, ethics challenges faced by attorneys and judges in the courtroom, and a litigators roundtable featuring judges and plaintiff/defense trial lawyers sharing helpful tips.
Presenting the annual “State of the Courts” panel were King County District Court Assistant Presiding Judge Corinna Harn, WA Court of Appeals Division I Chief Judge Michael Spearman, KCBA President Kim Tran, Seattle Municipal Court Presiding Judge Kimi Kondo, and King County Superior Court Presiding Judge Susan Craighead.
Panelists for the “litigators’ roundtable” discussion on best practices in the courtroom were King County Superior Court Judge Marianne Spearman, past King County Bar Foundation President Harry Schneider, King County Superior Court Judge Palmer Robinson, KCBA Judiciary & Litigation Committee co-chair Lafcadio Darling, and WA Association for Justice Past President Karen Koehler.
KCBA President Kim Tran, Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Barbara Madsen, and King County Superior Court Presiding Judge Susan Craighead. The chief justice delivered keynote remarks. KCBA Past President Scott Smith.
A public policy session reviewed issues related to reform of legal financial obligations with King County Superior Court Judge Teresa Doyle, American Civil Liberties Union staff attorney Prachi Dave, KCBA First Vice President Kathryn Battuello, and Columbia Legal Services staff attorney Nick Allen.
