Email: The Frenemy You Can't Live Without

By Irene Leonard

During the past 40 years, email has evolved into the method of business communication worldwide. The trouble is we both hate and love email at the same time. Here's what I mean.

We hate email because of the volume of emails we receive every day. We hate spam, but we love being able to filter out spam before we see it.

We hate having emails from potential new clients go into our spam folder. We hate that a new client doesn't see our email because it went into their spam folder.

We love email because it makes it much easier and faster to communicate. Ironically, we also hate email for the same reason, which is that it makes it easier and faster for others to communicate with us so that the speed of practicing law feels supercharged.

We love email because we can send documents easily and cheaply. We don't have to spend time putting documents in envelopes or making many copies for multiple parties. Everyone on the mailing list can open a single email with the same PDF attachment or link. Transmitting it all occurs at the speed of light (almost).

We love email because we can take time to write a well-crafted message rather than playing phone tag with someone. We love it because it makes it so easy to stay in touch with people.

We love email if we're introverted and prefer reading what people want to tell us, rather than talking at great length on the phone or in person.

Naturally, you'd prefer to love email rather than hate it. You'll love it when your productivity improves through good email practices.
