More than 80 trivia buffs gathered on October 21 at Alstadt in Pioneer Square to compete for the title of "Smartest Team" during the Young Lawyers Division's Second Annual Trivia Night. While waiting for the main event to begin, competitors kept it civil by mingling, snacking on hot pretzels and sausages, and trying the wide variety of specialty German beers on tap.
Around 7:30, our witty quizmaster, Tabitha, from Geeks Who Drink, kicked off the contest consisting of six themed rounds. We had a "Bad YouTube Karaoke" round, in which teams had to guess the song being poorly sung by someone from a YouTube video. There was a visual round, where teams guessed what movies famous wanted posters were from. There was even an "I Looked Under the Bed 3x" round where all the answers were either "lost" or "found" (think, D.B. Cooper's cash).
This year we added small prizes for the top point winners of each round. Prizes included a special dessert, Seahawks keychains and Sounders accessories.
With 15 teams, the competition was stiff, but in the end one team did consistently well winning the visual round and pulling ahead, team Bluebook Style. Walker Stanovsky, Kiry Nelsen, Dane Westermeyer, Phil Paine and Mallory Gitt not only have bragging rights for next year, but they took home a trophy and a gift card to Elysian Brewery.
A prize was also given for the best team name. Everyone pulled out their best puns making the decision a hard one. The Habeas Corpses were just slightly edged out by Beyond a Reasonable Stout. In the spirit of friendly competition, our last-place finishers were given "Better Luck Next Year" medals and have promised to use their Starbucks gift cards to study for next year's event.
Overall, it was a lighthearted and lively evening. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Alstadt for their excellent service, as well as being so accommodating. A big thank you also goes out to Deven Kapoor from WestlawNext for not only sponsoring the event, but joining a team and getting into the spirit.
We had so much fun and hope to see everyone back for next year's YLD Trivia Night!
