The King County Bar Association is sad to announce that longtime KCBA member and former president Murray Guterson passed away on October 18. Mr. Guterson served as KCBA president from 1976-1977. A Bar Bulletin profile of him in 1995 noted, "Those who have seen Murray in the courtroom suggest that it is his genuine decency, integrity, and honesty which he uses so effectively to his clients' ultimate advantage."

Retired Superior Court Judge Harry McCarthy shared this memory of Mr. Guterson: "Murray was the epitome of professionalism and courtesy as he adroitly and vigorously represented his clients. I will always remember Murray with great respect as the consummate lawyer and gentleman whose word was indeed always his bond. He will always be, in my mind, the role model for all lawyers to emulate. A good man and a true professional, he will be missed by all who were privileged to know him in or outside the courtroom."

Superior Court Judge Michael Trickey hailed Mr. Guterson as "a tour de force." Presiding Judge Richard McDermott remembers Mr. Guterson as "someone I always wanted to emulate, but always felt I fell short of; he was a lawyer's lawyer."

Past KCBA President Richard Manning recalls, "I knew Murray from the time I started practicing law in 1960. In those days, our small firm (six lawyers) did very little felony criminal defense. It was so easy to refer cases to Murray - we always knew he would provide the very best. And he was the very best! Besides that, a wonderful guy!"
