Calling BOLD Mentors
By Nancy Williams
BOLD is the KCBA's informal section for seasoned lawyers (those who have been in practice for 30 years or more). If you meet that criterion, you're in BOLD.
From the beginning of the BOLD initiative, it's been obvious that our members have a wealth of experience and perspective. And our BOLD treasure trove is a potential resource for more junior attorneys like those in the Young Lawyers Division (five or fewer years of practice and/or under 36 years of age).
That brings us to the subject of mentoring. Why not pair up BOLD-ers and YLD members for mutual benefit?
The first step in the process is to identify and obtain commitments from BOLD folks who are interested in serving as mentors. Here's the expectation: If we pair you with a YLD mentee, you would commit to a minimum of six one-on-one get-togethers during 2013.
The visits can be casual in tone, over coffee or lunch. We would introduce you to your mentee at a kickoff event for all participants early next year. This will be an opportunity to begin your acquaintance and tell each other about your expectations from the relationship.
After that, you and your mentee can take your discussions in whatever direction you choose. We will likely check in a couple of times during the year to suggest possible topics of discussion and get your feedback on how it's going.
Would you like to participate as a BOLD mentor? If so, please contact Cate Humpage by email at firstname.lastname@example.org to sign up. We'll provide you with further information and details on the kickoff event as they develop.
Please consider sharing your valuable experiences and views for the benefit of a junior lawyer who, many years from now, may also attain BOLD status.
