The Law Librarians Are Coming to Seattle

By Rita Dermody

This month more than 1,500 law librarians from every type of law library, from across the United States and from 10 countries around the world, will be visiting Seattle for the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) at the Washington State Convention Center.

Proceedings will begin July 13 and continue through July 16. If you are looking for your favorite law librarian on those days, they may be found at the annual meeting. Other than trying to contact a law librarian, why should you care about this meeting?

The annual meeting is the premier educational event for our association. The meeting has three full days of sessions on a variety of topics, with as many as eight sessions held concurrently. The programming covers a wide variety of topics and speakers discussing operational issues, as well as substantive law issues. We open with the keynote speaker David Weinberger, a frequent commentator on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and a senior researcher at the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet & Society.

There are several programs concerned with the self-represented litigant. Each day a "Hot Topic" will be offered, drawn from recent events and concerns. Sunday's topic will be "What's My Bottom Line? Managing Law Firms Through the Great Recession." Monday's topic will be "Finding the Veronica Mars Within: Using Social Media for Investigative Purposes in Legal Practice." Tuesday's topic will be "Rethinking the Cloud: Legal Aspects of Cloud Solutions."

Other topics include intellectual property, copyright, digitization, wine law, top trends reshaping the legal industry, state constitutions and knowledge management. Details about the programming can be found at the American Association of Law Libraries' website: http://aall2013.crowdcompass.com/activities#day_20130712.

Attendance is not restricted to law librarians. Anyone interested in these topics is invited to attend. Daily registration is available at the association's booth at the Convention Center. Please call me if you have further questions at 206-477-1305.
