Fisher House: Serving Those Who Serve for Us
The Fisher House, located near the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health System in Seattle on Columbia Way, has been serving the families of veterans and active duty military personnel since September 2008.
The Fisher House program recognizes the special sacrifices and hardships that our military personnel make in service of the broader community by providing a "home away from home" for families of veterans receiving care in the VA Puget Sound Health System.
The facility has 20 guest suites that are available free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are allowed to stay at the Fisher House for as long as their loved ones are patients at the hospital.
During its history, the Fisher House has served more than 2,700 families with the help of countless volunteers. Volunteers can serve in various capacities from helping with check-in/check-out, arranging outings for the guests, offering to teach classes (scrapbooking, gardening, etc.) and, most commonly, baking or cooking meals.
The King County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, through its Community Involvement Committee, organized a cooking event at the Fisher House last November. The event was a huge success with many new participants coming together to cook, serve and share a meal with the guests at the Fisher House. The committee plans to host future events at the Fisher House.
