June 2014 Bar Bulletin

By Karen Murray

Gov. Jay Inslee

The King County Bar Association will be honoring Governor Jay Inslee at its annual dinner on June 18 with the Friend of the Legal Profession Award for his leadership in establishing a moratorium on the death penalty during his term as governor. This award is given for distinguished and meritorious service to the legal profession and justice system.

On February 11, Gov. Inslee made his opinion known on the long and oftentimes emotional debate over our state's death penalty. He stated, "Equal justice under the law is the state's primary responsibility. And in death penalty cases, I'm not convinced equal justice is being served."

He further explained his decision in staying the execution of the nine remaining death row prisoners. "It is clear that the use of capital punishment is inconsistent and unequal, and it's time to have a conversation about ensuring equal justice under the law."

His action on calling for a moratorium on the death penalty is consistent with the ongoing work of the KCBA's Public Policy Committee and the position of the KCBA Board of Trustees.
