Feeling BOLD-er as Years Go By?

By Nancy Williams

Seasoned lawyers often seem relaxed and at ease in their law practices, but at the same time may be thinking about what comes next. After 30 or more years of practice, many find their priorities changing.

Like YLD members just starting out, experienced lawyers also enjoy the opportunity to hang out with colleagues who share their perspectives and questions about the years ahead. That's why KCBA developed the BOLD section for lawyers who have spent more than 30 years in the profession (or who are 55 or older, regardless of years of practice). If you're a KCBA member within the defined group, you're part of BOLD.

Our meetings are informal, but lively, and typically include both a substantive and a social component. Recognizing the varied interests of its members, BOLD sponsored three programs over the last nine months.

We began last fall with a session on financial planning for retirement. In February, we heard about international teaching opportunities for lawyers, with a special focus on the Justice Advocacy Africa project. Most recently, Prof. Peter Nicolas of the UW School of Law presented his analysis and prognostications on the same-sex marriage cases argued this year before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Each program featured a social hour for BOLD-ers, to share conversation and a glass of wine with colleagues. And some of the programs qualify for free CLE credit to boot!

One of the items still on the BOLD wish list is to rally a team of runners/walkers who will join in the YLD Fun Run and show those junior lawyers the power of endurance. Maybe next year.

Mike Wrenn will be heading up the informal BOLD steering group for the next year. We would love to have you at steering committee meetings or submitting your ideas in some other form. And please try one of our BOLD programs.

If you have a little gray hair and a lot of smile lines (or even if you don't), you'll be welcome and will feel right at home. Resolve to be BOLD in the year ahead!
