Full House at Breakfast With Champions
Over $300,000 Raised for Pro Bono and Diversity
By Scott Pinkston
Esteemed radio journalist Ari Shapiro, host of NPR’s “All Things Considered,” charmed a capacity crowd at the King County Bar Foundation’s 16th Annual Breakfast With Champions. The March 29 Breakfast raised more than $300,000 through both private gifts and a record number of sponsorships, all in support of the King County Bar Association’s pro bono civil legal aid and diversity programs.
KCBF Secretary Eric Gillett, making his first-ever appearance as master of ceremonies, was joined onstage at the Seattle Sheraton Grand Ballroom by former Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna and Foundation President Don Scaramastra, as well as two of this year’s KCBF Bar Scholars — Azar Alexander (SU) and Phoebe Huang (UW).
In addition to gaining Shapiro’s insider’s perspective of the machinations of modern politics and the current crop of presidential candidates, guests heard stories of how lives are changed through the opportunities provided by the generosity of others.
The Foundation premiered a video featuring one such story: that of Wendy, a young mother and Family Law Mentor Program client who was able to protect herself and her infant daughter through the exhaustive efforts of KCBA volunteer attorneys Joanna Silverstein, Kellie Tabor and Bill Braun. That video is viewable by clicking on the Breakfast With Champions link at the Foundation’s website:www.KCBF.org.
The King County Bar Foundation extends its deepest thanks to all of our sponsors, table captains, guests, trustees, staff and volunteers for making the Breakfast With Champions a tremendous success and memorable event, year after year. Special acknowledgements go to the members of the Breakfast planning committee, chaired by Gillett, who volunteered their time and energy to organize this event: Todd R. Bowers, Jeffrey G. Frank, R. Gregory Kipper, Kelly Twiss Noonan, Theodore O. Prosise and Scott A. Smith.
