FLI Students Get an Inside Look

On February 13, fifteen FLI students spent the day at the U.S. Courthouse in Seattle learning about the many careers that can be found within the walls of 700 Stewart.

U.S. District Court judges Richard Jones and Ricardo Martinez provided inspiration and shared stories from their youth, school and time on the bench. Court staff, members of the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Federal Public Defender Office, and Chief Judge Marsha Pechman's law clerk also discussed their careers and their vastly diverse professional journeys.

Deputies from the U.S. Marshal's Office talked about the history and mission of the service, and helped students try on tactical vests and shackles.

The court treated the students to pizza for lunch, while officers from the pretrial and probation services departments provided an overview of their professions and their personal successes. Tony Leahy, executive director of the CENTS program, wrapped up the day with a presentation on the danger of excessive student debt and the importance of planning for higher education.

FLI students hit the road to Olympia at the end of March to meet Supreme Court Justice Steven González and members of court staff. Students toured the Temple of Justice and learned how the court works and the types of cases the justices and staff deal with.

The afternoon started with a walk through the Capitol Building and campus. Students then spent the rest of the afternoon with Sen. David Frockt and Representatives Cyrus Habib, Laurie Jinkins and Roger Freeman.

The FLI internship application process is in high gear. Eighteen applications have been received and interviews with law firms will be scheduled soon. Firms interested in hosting an FLI intern this summer should contact Membership Coordinator Janielle Harris at
