Justice Sotomayor Wows Town Hall

Justice Sotomayor signs a copy of her book for an 8-year-old fan named Andrea.

"I'm about to turn 60 and still feel like a kid," Justice Sonia Sotomayor said smiling, settling comfortably into a chair center stage at Town Hall. "The self image is really divorced from reality," she added, drawing chuckles. "How many of you think of yourselves as 'old?'"<

And with that the Supreme Court justice put a crowd of 850 at ease.

Justice Sotomayor appeared in Seattle on March 10, in part, to promote the paperback version of her best-selling memoir, My Beloved World (Vintage), but also "to bring the Court to life."

Her visit held huge significance to those of us who grew up without Latino role models outside the home. Four years ago, she was sworn in as the 111th justice and the first Hispanic to serve on the Supreme Court. It was one thing to watch her get sworn in on television, quite another to see her in person. Justice Sotomayor did not disappoint. For an hour and a half, she dispensed wisdom and inspiration to those of us hungry for encouragement.
