Volunteer Opportunities at the Bar
By Andrew Prazuch
This month I'm writing to invite you to become more active in the KCBA. We have many opportunities for involvement, including traditional bar committee work as well as pro bono client services. No matter which activity you choose, I think you'll find it a rewarding experience.
Here are some of our committees that I know are always looking for new members:
Continuing Legal Education: Chaired by Mary Anne Vance (Law Office of Mary Anne Vance), this committee provides oversight and support for exploring new topics and subject matter for CLEs and also varied delivery methods such as webcast programs. The committee also provides feedback regarding marketing, surveys and new technology advances in the area of CLE programming. Meets year-round on third Fridays at noon.
Bar Bulletin: Chaired by Karen Sutherland (Ogden Murphy Wallace), this committee works with the Bar Bulletin editor to produce this monthly publication of interest to the legal community by identifying prospective articles and themes, selecting potential authors, writing articles, and providing feedback on the form and content of the paper. Meets year-round on fourth Tuesdays at noon.
Diversity: Chaired by Court of Appeals Judge Michael Spearman, this committee promotes a diverse legal profession and is responsible for outreach programs to minority law students and working with law firm leadership to increase diversity. The committee also recommends allocation of minority scholarship grants for area law schools. Meets year-round on first Fridays at noon.
Fair Campaign Practices: This committee considers complaints about unfair campaign practices in judicial election campaigns and recommends action to the Board of Trustees. The committee is limited to attorneys only; active judges may not serve. It meets only when complaints are filed.
