SU/YLD Social Media Event Draws Throng

The verdict is in. Social media is here to stay and it's drawing a crowd.

Did you know that more than 135 million professionals use LinkedIn? Are you one of them? Have you optimized your profile? Do you know the etiquette points for using the site? Do you know how to use the Advanced Search and Keyword tools to identify connections and request "warm" introductions?

On February 8, these topics were discussed at Seattle University School of Law, along with tutorials on using Facebook, Twitter, AVVO and blogs to develop a legal practice and establish an online presence.

The room was filled with dozens of practicing attorneys and students ready to learn more about how social media can really benefit them, and the speakers delivered. Matt Youngquist, expert career coach and president of Career Horizons, kicked off the event with a remarkable one-hour overview of LinkedIn that left the audience eager for even more tips, tools and tricks. From LinkedIn, the focus expanded to other forms of social media. Andrew N. Ackley of Ackley Law Group PLLC (, Justin P. Walsh of Karl E. Malling P.S. ( and Kevin O'Keefe, CEO and publisher of LexBlog, Inc. (, discussed the positive impact of social media on their legal practices and careers.

They share the notion that social media is built on friends and trust, and recommend that lawyers blog to build relationships. They routinely blog, tweet, "like" and stay connected on LinkedIn to maintain their online presence.
