In the better-late-than-never category, it has recently come to the attention of the Bar Bulletin that the Seattle Lawyers Basketball League wrapped up its 30th season last spring in a hard-fought, but little-in-doubt title tilt between the Ashbaugh Beal and Foster Pepper squads.
Ashbaugh Beal, which entered the tourney as the No. 2 seed following a 9-3 regular season, prevailed over the Foster Pepper cagers 46-34 after running out to a 22-11 halftime lead. The thrill of victory avenged two regular-season losses to the top-seeded FP squad, which came in with a 10-2 record.
It was the first league title for the AB hoopsters since the 2001 Cinderella-story team shocked the world as a No. 8 seed, taking a triple-overtime thriller against Cozen O'Connor. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Rich Skalbania - the only member remaining from the 2001 team - captained both championship teams.
A combination of stifling defense and poor shooting gave Ashbaugh Beal a 22-11 halftime lead, as Skalbania, a 28-year LBL veteran, squared off against former Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, who has spent 23 years in the league, in an exchange of three-pointers midway through the first period.
