The landmark case Salzhandler v. Caputo1 came to my attention the first day of labor law class during my last year at law school in 1978. Prior to that moment I had hardly a clue that my maternal grandfather had risked his livelihood and safety, as a house painter and painter’s union treasurer, in the very early 1960s, to stop what he perceived to be ongoing financial wrongdoing and theft by corrupt senior union officers in Brooklyn.
