The Felix Perfecto

August 2022 Bar Bulletin

By Christopher L. Young

August 15, 2012, 1 P.M. The thermometer at the corner of Edgar and Dave read 84 degrees. Not a cloud could be seen in the Wednesday sky. Gulls and terns circled lazily above looking for hot dogs, peanuts, and garlic fries. Felix Hernandez stood proudly on the pitcher’s mound, three shirt buttons undone, and stared at the third-base dugout of the Tampa Bay Rays. Even then, hardly anyone liked the upstart Rays. Still, no one in the paltry, sunburned crowd, including yours truly, expected to see a perfect game; a 1-0 pitchers’ duel, and the last perfect game thrown in the Major Leagues.1
