Remember David Halberstam? Who else could illuminate so vividly the epic love story between the Red Sox and Yankees,1 Michael Jordan’s psychopathic competitiveness,2 or the Ivy League geniuses behind the good-faith American brilliance in Vietnam?3 We lost Mr. Halberstam fifteen years ago, but until red-state legislatures and myopic school boards ban and burn his books (guffaw at your peril, he was both Jewish and irreverent) we may continue to draw lessons from Mr. Halberstam’s life’s work.
