Between December 1831 and October 1836, an almost-twenty-three-year-old nature enthusiast had the pleasure of serving as a self-financed naturalist on the HMS Beagle. The copious notes he took on his travels and his uncanny ability to capture images through detailed diagrams and figures, interspersed with his theories, served him well upon his return to England. In November 1859, Charles Darwin published The Origin of the Species capturing many of his observations and theories based on his experiences on the HMS Beagle.1
