They say, my friends, that time heals all wounds. Funny, even after two-hundred years, Mr. Hamilton’s argument that our Constitution need not include a bill of rights continues to smart.1 Hamilton was wrong, as most of us understand the original amendments to the Constitution to be necessary safeguards of liberty. Unfortunately, many today seem to misunderstand what rights are protected or even what liberty means. Let me explain.
Although gun holsters in red, white, and blue leather embossed with “We the People” are quite fetching (and can garner many compliments at the state fair), the First Amendment’s safeguards are what I want to discuss:
