2021 Legislative Changes to the Probate Code

In April, Governor Inslee signed Senate Bill 5132,1 which makes several changes to Washington’s probate code related to closing estates and the powers of personal representatives. These changes became effective on July 25, 2021, and apply to all probate estates regardless of when the probate was commenced. While this is not a major rewrite of the state’s probate laws, the changes are important for practitioners to be aware of and will require changes to most forms used to close an estate.
