They say you never forget your first. I’d like to think that applies even more to lawyers: your first jury trial, your first appellate win, your first bar complaint (from a client whom you’ll also never forget), your first time saying “f---” in court while reading a transcript, and the list goes on. For me, there was one thing I always dreamt of as a public defender. It’s the pinnacle of opportunities, a sign that you’ve done something remarkable . . . a sign that you’ve made it: appearing before the Washington Supreme Court.

It was a sad day when I left...
