No Pomp, No Cookies: Virtual Washington Supreme Court Inauguration

The traditional presentation of the American and Washington flags by uniformed guardsmen with drum rolls and salutes was missing as were the cookies and coffee in the Supreme Court reception room after the ceremony. Still. the remote January 11 swearing-in of former King County Superior Court Judge and now Chief Justice Steven Gonzalez was warm, serious and inspirational. Singing the National Anthem was Jose Iniquez, who grew up in orchard country in Mattawa as the seventh of 11 children, going on to become an award-winning opera and Mariachi bolero performer.
