Public to Decide the Direction of Public Safety: Qualifications, Accountability and Transparency

This November the citizens of King County will have an opportunity to vote on several public safety reform measures. 

In 2019, following over a year of community outreach, public input, research and debate, the King County Charter Review Commission — on which I served — made three significant recommendations to the King County Council intended to improve response to public safety concerns: 

1. Return the King County Sheriff to an appointed rather than elected position

2. Grant the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight subpoena powers 

3. Specify inquests be performed for all in-custody deaths and provide...
