The Future of the Law Institute (FLI), an affiliate of the King County Bar Foundation, has been honored with a $10,000 “Diversity Dollars” grant from the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA).
Only 10 organizations nationwide received the competitive award, offered in celebration of MCCA’s 10th anniversary. Representatives from FLI’s Board of Directors received the award at Microsoft headquarters from Mary Snapp, an MCCA director and Microsoft vice president.
“The recipients of this year’s Diversity Dollars grants have programs that keenly reflect the mission of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association,” said MCCA Executive Director Veta T. Richardson.
“While some of the winning projects are focused on professional development and others are focused on outreach or pipeline, all of the programs further the goal to increase opportunities for diverse people in the legal profession. MCCA is pleased to be able to support the important work that they are doing.”
MCCA was founded in 1997 to advocate the expanded hiring, promotion and retention of minority attorneys in corporate legal departments and the law firms that serve them. In addition, MCCA stimulates an ongoing dialogue of diversity “best practices.” MCCA accomplishes its mission through the collection and dissemination of information on diversity in the legal profession.

FLI is a unique “pipeline” program offering a portfolio of opportunities to high school students historically under-represented in the field of law. FLI has served more than 300 students from 25 area schools since 2002 with workshops, mentoring, scholarships, internships and more. Each year, more than 100 volunteers from King County’s bar, bench and law schools work with FLI to offer these opportunities.
For more information on the Future of the Law Institute visit FLI’s Web site, www.futureofthelaw.org. Volunteer and other opportunities are available in the following areas:
- Serving as an FLI mentor;
- Providing a student with a paid six-to-eight-week summer internship in your firm or office;
- Supporting FLI’s programming as a sponsor; and
- Offering an undergraduate scholarship in your firm’s name.
