Event to Mark - Day of Remembrance
Seattle University School of Law’s Seattle Journal for Social Justice (SJSJ) and Asian Pacific Islander Law Student Association (APILSA) invite you to “Honoring Courage: Remembering the Japan-ese American Internment.” “Honor-ing Courage” will recognize those affected by the internment; those forced to leave their homes; those who were incarcerated; those who served in the military while their families were interned; and those who resisted.
Featured speakers and attendees will include representatives from the local Japanese American community: Gene Akutsu, who resisted the draft; Karen Korematsu, daughter of Fred Korematsu, who challenged the internment before the U.S. Supreme Court and ultimately received the Presidential Medal of Freedom; Prof. Lorraine Bannai, author of an SJSJ article on three Japanese Americans who challenged the internment in court and the lessons to be learned from their stances in the post-9/11 environment; and Prof. Larry Matsuda, who was born in Minidoka Relocation Center in Hunt, Idaho, and serves as the chairperson of the Seattle Uni-versity Japanese American Remem-brance Garden Committee. Judge Ron Mamiya will serve as master of ceremonies.
Mark your calendars and join us for this event on February 15 at 5 p.m. in the Second Floor Gallery of the Seattle University School of Law.
