Volunteer of the Month

The Volunteer Attorneys For Persons With HIV/AIDS (VAPWA) Program has recognized Stephen A. Bernheim as November’s Community Legal Services Volunteer of the Month.

Bernheim is a seasoned eight-year veteran of the VAPWA program, a KCBA program that provides referral for legal representation in civil legal matters for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. As a solo practitioner, Bernheim brings a wealth of knowledge in the area of family immigration, asylum and refugee practice. Over the years, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to the program and a passion for preserving the legal rights of low-income, HIV-positive clients. Bernheim wasted no time diving into “the trenches” with his clients by tackling complicated immigration cases.

Bernheim began his legal career at Bogle & Gates practicing immigration and commercial litigation. Before “flying solo,” he was an instructor of legal writing and advocacy at the University of Puget Sound Law School and an associate and of counsel at the firm of Breskin & Robbins.

Bernheim received his J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law and is admitted to practice in Washington courts, the Executive Office of Immigration Review, the Board of Immigration Appeals, the United States Court of International Trade, the Puyallup and Skagit tribal courts, federal district and bankruptcy courts in Washington state and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He holds professional associations with the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, King County Bar Association, American Collectors Association and the Washington State Bar Association.

Congratulations to Stephen Bernheim for being selected as November’s Volunteer of the Month. KCBA and Community Legal Services extend their thanks for his tireless efforts to ensure comfort, dignity and justice for persons living with HIV/AIDS in King County.
