Lawyers Helping Hungry Children Makes a Difference for Washington Families
Lawyers Helping Hungry Children (“LHHC”) is an organization of professionals in the Washington state legal community who see childhood hunger as a critical social injustice and are committed to ending hunger in our region. Since 1991, hundreds of lawyers and volunteers have joined forces to support programs that prevent childhood hunger and to make a difference in the lives and futures of our children. LHHC is a nonprofit organization that is operated completely through the efforts of volunteers. Except for a small amount of money to support fundraising, every dollar LHHC raises goes directly toward hunger relief.
LHHC is the proud sponsor of several programs that are dedicated to ending childhood hunger. Beneficiaries include Northwest Harvest, which hosts the innovative Infants Corner at the Cherry Street Food Bank in downtown Seattle. Each week, Cherry Street provides basic food for infants and toddlers, including formula, infant cereal and baby food. LHHC also sponsors an annual “Lawyers Day at the Food Bank” by providing supplies and volunteers. The City of Seattle’s Summer Sack Lunch Program is another beneficiary of LHHC’s fundraising. This program provides more than 347,000 infant and children’s meals and snacks at 126 locations throughout the city, including playgrounds and community centers, in an effort to fill the gap for children who would be eligible for subsidized meals during the school year.
Financial assistance also goes to the Children’s Alliance Nutrition Outreach program, which provides feeding assistance to children during summer breaks, to rural school programs, and to school breakfast and after-school snack programs. This year LHHC was also proud to partner for the first time with the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Washington State, which is currently launching Washington’s first toll-free food information and referral hotline. Finally, LHHC supports the work of CARE’s World Hunger Campaign, which provides emergency food, farming assistance and nutrition education across the globe.
As in years past, LHHC’s principal fundraising event for 2005 will be its annual breakfast. Lawyers from across Washington are invited to attend this wonderful event, which will be held on November 2, 2005, at 7:30 a.m. at the Grand Hyatt in Seattle. Attorney General Rob McKenna and University of Washington School of Law Dean W.H. “Joe” Knight will be the keynote speakers. Guests will also be treated to a fun and inspirational performance by the Leschi Elementary School Children’s Choir. Donations per person are $75 in advance (preferred) or at the door. For a donation of $750, a firm can sponsor a table of 10 and will be recognized at the breakfast and acknowledged in the Washington State Bar News. To support this event, please contact LHHC at (206) 292-5858.
LHHC encourages members of the local legal community to get involved in its many activities. If you are interested in becoming a member of the all-volunteer Board of Directors, please contact LHHC’s chair, Francisco Duarte (fduarte@foxbowmanduarte.com or (425) 451-1995), or any of the other Board members to learn more about how you can participate.
