    Leadership Change

    By Jean Holcomb

Change fuels the fashion industry. As seasons change, fashion guidelines also change. In certain parts of the country, the arrival of Labor Day weekend signals the time to put away those white shoes and summer pastels. In the Northwest, the lines between seasonally fashionable gear become a little more blurry. The timing on when it’s necessary to put the liner back in your all-weather coat may not be dictated by the calendar, but may in fact have a lot to do with the early arrival of the fall rainy season.

For an issue on changing fashions, the library’s story focuses on a change that will also be coming in September. After 13 years as the Director, I’m planning my exit. At the end of September, my husband and I will move to North Carolina. We’ll be building a house in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains northwest of Winston Salem where we’ll be watching the colors changing seasons bring and enjoying the close proximity of children and grandchildren.

The face you will see heading the Library column beginning with the October issue will be that of Marcus Hochstetler, currently director of the Mahoning Law Library Association in Youngstown, Ohio. The formal announcement from the Library Board President follows:

King County Law Library Director Selected
The Honorable Catherine Shaffer, Superior Court Judge for King County, Washington, and President of the King County Law Library Board of Trustees, is pleased to announce the selection of Marcus L. Hochstetler as the new Law Librarian and Director of the King County Law Library.

Mr. Hochstetler holds a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from Drexel University, a Masters of Arts in Religion from Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Malone College. His prior professional experiences as a law librarian include serving as the Director of the Mahoning Law Library Association of Youngstown, Ohio and as Legal Reference Librarian at the Philadelphia firm of Stradley, Ronan, Stevens, & Young, L.L.P.

Active in law library professional association activities on the national and local levels, Mr. Hochstetler currently serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the State Court County Law Libraries Special Interest Section of the American Association of Law Libraries and as a member of the AALL Government Relations Committee. He has been involved in committee and board service as a member of the Ohio Region-al Association of Law Libraries and has chaired the Ohio County Law Librarians group. He has written regularly for local and national law library publications and has presented programs on topics ranging from legislative advocacy to public outreach for law libraries.

Mr. Hochstetler, who begins his new position on September 1, 2005, will succeed Jean M. Holcomb, who will retire on September 30 after 13 years of service as the Library’s Director.

    Library Wins National Award:
Last Spring the King County Law Library kicked off its 85th Anniversary Campaign to raise the funds for the renovation of our sixth floor Seattle Courthouse Law Library. Thanks to the generosity of over 130 firms and individuals, the campaign was a true success.

As a part of the fundraising effort, the Library staff created a movie to tell the Library’s story: Without Access to Information, There is No Justice. A Documentary Video Celebrating 85 Years of Public Law Library Service in Washington. After the campaign ended, we entered the campaign DVD for consideration in the non-print category of the Law Library Publication award contest sponsored by the American Association of Law Libraries.

We’re thrilled to announce that our movie won this prestigious award. Reference Librarian Kim Ositis, the producer of our movie, will attend the association’s annual meeting this July in San Antonio to accept the award on our behalf.

    You’re Invited:
The Law Library Board and staff invite the community to a reception on Wednesday, September 7, from 5:00-6:00 PM in the Seattle Courthouse Law Library to say goodbye to Library Director Jean Holcomb as she prepares to relocate to North Carolina.

    Internet class topic:
The Seattle Law Library internet lunch-break class for web users will not be offered in August, but will resume on September 15. For information about additional training opportunities, view the monthly training calendar on the library’s web page at www.kcll.org.
