    February 2, 2005 Board Meeting

    The KCBA Board of Trustees met on February 2. The following is a summary of key actions taken at that meeting. Complete minutes of this and other board meetings are available from the KCBA office.

    Letter of Support for the Equal Justice Coalition

    The Board approved sending a letter in support of the Equal Justice Coalition. A letter will be sent asking the legislature to make a significant and meaningful increase in the general fund appropriation for civil legal aid.

    Board Approves Legislative Committee Recommendations for HB1226, SB5015, SJR 8200

    HB 1226 Section 2 (Limits on Contributions to Judicial Cam-paigns)

    This bill would limit the contributions to Judicial Campaigns for Superior Court, Court of Appeals, and the Washington State Supreme Court. District and Municipal Courts were excluded. It is important to note, the Walsh Commission Report was the precursor to this bill to limit contributions to campaigns for Judges.

    SB5015 (Creation of a non-partisan nominating judicial commission)

    This bill would allow for the creation of a non-partisan judicial commission who would nominate and submit to the governor three names of people qualified to fill mid-term vacancies for the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

    SJR 8200 (Constitutional Amend-ment)

    This bill would allow for the constitutional amendment necessary for SB5015:

    A motion to approve the legislative committee recommendations with respect to HB1226, SB5015, and SJR 8200 as amended and in the alternative as originally written, was moved and seconded and approved by majority vote.
